Music at the Library: The West African Kora comes to Basalt!

Sean Gaskell's performances feature songs on the kora - a 21 stringed West African harp. Many songs played on the kora preserve an 800 year history dating back to the founding of the Mande empire, and Gaskell's performance will include interspersed discussions about the kora and its role in this history. 

Gaskell studied under the extensive instruction of Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Gambia, and both Youssoupha Cissokho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal. Join us for Music at the Library this month to experience and learn about this incredible instrument and its music! Refreshments provided beginning at 5:00PM.

En sus presentaciones, Sean Gaskell interpreta melodías en la kora, un arpa de 21 cuerdas con orígenes en el oeste africano.  Muchos de los temas interpretados en la kora guardan 800 años de historia, remontándose a la fundación del imperio Mandé. La interpretación de Gaskell incluirá discusiones entremezcladas sobre la kora y su papel en esta historia.
